CSUF: No Smoking at School

Posted: Updated:

A new ban on smoking at Cal State Fullerton makes the school – the first in the Cal State system to prohibit lighting up.

"Personally i don't smoke but I kind of like because I don't like inhaling smoke," said Quinn Royston, a CSUF student.

Ash trays on campus were torn down and new no smoking signs were put up.

The university says the reason for the ban is that CSUF is committed to a healthy and productive environment.  But not everyone's thrilled about the new rule.

"I don't smoke.  But I don't feel comfortable telling someone not to smoke either, I mean it's their right," said David Barrios, another student.

It's obvious, by the cigarette butts on the ground,  that people did smoke on campus.  Now, many students say they'll breathe easier knowing the school is smoke free.

"Knowing that it's smoke free makes it a better environment for me," said Madeline Brydges.

The rule prohibits smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes and even electronic cigarettes on campus, in the parking lots , or any other school-owned property.

"It might just be hard to enforce in my opinion," said Royston.

Although CSU Fullerton is the first out of 23 Cal State schools to ban smoking, there are more than 1,000 colleges and universities around the country that have similar bans in place.
