PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos says he's leaving to take a similar job in California.

Cavazos announced Thursday afternoon that he's going to be the city manager in Santa Ana pending City Council approval on Monday.

He began working for Phoenix in 1987 as a management intern and was appointed city manager in 2009.

Cavazos says he will work closely with Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and City Council over the coming months during his transition.

Stanton says Cavazos "helped guide Phoenix through the toughest economic period in our history, and did so with creativity and professionalism."

City Councilman Michael Nowakowski says Cavazos negotiated "agreements that led to closing the $270 million deficit he inherited when he took the job as manager."
