Cameras on Cobb Co. school buses reduce offenders

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A few years back, the Cobb County School District added security cameras to their school buses in an effort to catch drivers breaking the law – for example, by illegally passing school buses.

Previously, Cobb County was reporting about 1,800 stop-arm violators a day. By the end of 2012, that number was cut in half because of the cameras. School officials saw using the cameras is all about increasing safety.

Rick Grisham, executive director of transportation for CCSD, said, "The first year we started this, we surveyed the drivers and we realized there were more than 1,800 violations per day. That's more than one per day per bus in Cobb County because we run about 1,000 buses a day."

The number offenders have dropped to roughly 900 a day.

CCCSD partners with American Traffic Solutions, a company that monitors the video and sends the clips of law breakers to the Cobb County Police Department. Law enforcement checks the video, pulls the license plate and writes up a fine for at least $300.

Several other metro Atlanta counties have taken notice and are adding security cameras to their buses, too. SkyFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley checked in for a progress report on how those cameras are working.

The cameras don't cost the county a penny. The third party company installs them and reports violators. Then, they split that fine money with the police department and the schools.
