FOX 29 Getting Results: Mosquito Infested Property

Posted: Updated:

Matthew will be four, come December. His little brother, Cameron, turns two next month. They love to play outdoors, but not in their backyard, says their mom.

"A lot of times we keep the boys inside now, just because it's gotten so out of control, as you can see, there are mosquitos flying around," says Kara Surrena.

And Kara Surrena says she knows the source of those 'skeeters: what looks like a kiddie theme park gone to seed, is actually the house next door, a house that's been vacant for several years, following the death of the homeowner.

The in-ground pool out back is covered, but the covering is covered with a layer of slime and scum that has made life miserable for the neighbors.

"It's become a breeding ground for mosquitos and both of my boys are covered any time they come out," says Surrena

Kara gave us a tour of little Cameron's pock-marked skin.

"Just gets mosquito bites all over his arm and his just really swell up," says Surrena. "We'd like to see the pool either drained or at least treated, some of the water off the top, siphoned."

I took Kara's concerns to the Upper Dublin Township building, where township manager Paul Leonard admitted that the house on North Hills Avenue has been an eyesore for a couple of years. In fact, the township has cited the property owner's widow for a half dozen violations, including that nasty swimming pool.

"With the two years that we've been involved, they have not done any maintenance," says Leonard. "To my knowledge, the maintenance that has occurred out there has all been at the direction of the township."

Leonard says that includes bare bones lawn mowing and treatment of the pool through the use of tablets designed to kill mosquito larvae.

"We've made the property safe. [We] absolutely understand that the neighbors are concerned about the condition of it, but we've made it safe. That doesn't mean you'd want to live next door to it," says Leonard.

Paul Leonard says that these citations are the first step toward hauling the property owner into court. But getting a hold of her in Albrightsville, Pa. has been a challenge. In the meantime, Leonard promises me that the township will continue mosquito treatments in that backyard and consider draining the pool.
