Police Lend Mom Helping Hand After Shoplifting Accusation

Posted: Updated:

Two officers buy the items for a woman who was trying to shoplift. The officers wanted to help the woman after they realized that she was falling on hard times and needed the items for her two young children.

The incident happened on July 30th at a K-Mart in Charleston, West Virginia. Patrolman Ryan Willard and Detective Duane Fields were called to the store to look into an incident of suspected shoplifting. Once inside the store, they realized that the woman was trying to take baby diapers, rash cream, and clothes for her children.

"I just felt bad for her," Detective Fields told the Charleston Daily Mail. "I've got kids at home."

So Detective Fields bought the diapers and rash cream for the woman, while Officer Willard took the woman's children around the store to pick out some clothes.

The woman was so shocked by the officers' kindness that she asked, "Why are you doing this? You're cops!"

And Officer Willard replied, "We're here for you. We're here to help you when we can, whether it's coming to a call or buying something for your kids."

The officers notified Child Protective Services, and also gave the woman multiple numbers to call in case she needed help in the future.

The woman's little daughter had been afraid of cops before this incident. Before leaving the store, she ran up to the two officers and gave them a hug. Witnessing this, the woman asked what she could do to thank the officers.

"Just try not to shoplift again," Officer Willard replied.
