Brooklyn DA: Drugs sold from ice cream truck

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A pier in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, was the spot for an ice cream truck that offered customers a lot more than extra sprinkles, according to prosecutors. The truck doubled as a front for a drug dealer who sold cocaine and oxycodone right in front of children, authorities said.

Narcotics investigators working for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes seized the ice cream truck. It has the usual supplies and equipment inside, but the D.A. said that the co-owner, Mina Gatas, was dishing out more than soft serve.

Surveillance video shows an undercover officer trading a hat full of cash for the illegal powder and pills.

The truck was stationed at the scenic Owl's Pier off Shore Parkway and 69th Street in Bay Ridge. It's a popular spot for residents who come to enjoy the water views, often with their children.

Authorities said the undercover officer first met Gatas at the In and Out Halal Deli where he worked. Prosecutors said that inside the store at Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street, Gatas offered to sell him drugs. Then they arranged to meet at the ice cream truck at the pier.

Hynes said the suspect gave the undercover a bonus vanilla ice cream cone after the drug transaction and even asked him if he wanted sprinkles.

Now he is facing drug sale and possession charges that could keep him behind bars for up to 20 years if he's convicted.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.
