Dog Helps Couple Escape After Tornado

Posted: Updated:

Paula and Ed Bendixen have called Huckleberry Acres Campground in New London their happy summer home for several years. That all changed on Wednesday.

"I'm just, I'm grateful to be alive," says Paula.

When the storm hit, on Wednesday, the camper was lifted up off the ground, flipped and landed almost on its roof.

"I heard this really weird loud noise and then everything just started spinning and that's all I remember until I work up and found myself in here in the dark and calling for my husband. I couldn't hear him, I thought he was dead. And then I heard him calling for me," recalls Paula.

Ed was rescued from the bedroom by a neighbor. He suffered a broken neck along with bumps and bruises.

"I didn't know if I was on the floor or the ceiling or what," says Ed.

Paula was bruised and trapped under debris and extremely disoriented, but little did she know, help was on the way.

"They couldn't get to me and my dog found a hole, and he came in, and nose budded me and whining and poking me and I sort of crawled and followed him out of the hole," says Paula.

That dog is George. He's the couple's eight-year-old Shelty/Corgi mix. Paula says George is extremely protective and the couple credits the dog for helping Paula escape without any serious injuries.

"Oh he's amazing...he's amazing," says Ed.

Campground owners say they're grateful the Bendixens, as well as everyone, came out alive. Once everything is cleaned up, the owners hope to get back to normal. The Bendixens hope to do the same, and from now on, their dog George may go by a different name.

"We nicknamed him Geo, the hero. He got me out, didn't you George?" says Paula to her new hero.
