Casino Pier Reopened, Hoping For Strong Finish

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. -

The rides are rolling, the food is sizzling, and the people are returning. Nine months after Hurricane Sandy, the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights is finally reopened. It has taken a lot of work to get things back to the way they were.

This was an iconic site after Hurricane Sandy. The jet star roller coaster was literally sucked into the ocean. The roller coaster has since been removed, fittingly replaced by a ride called "The Super Storm." Business owners in this community are hoping for a strong finish to a very difficult summer, residents agree.

"They do a good job. We grew up here, so there's a lot that's a little different, so it's not completely back to normal, but they do a good job," says a local resident.

"Everybody's really trying hard," says another resident.

The boardwalk is completely brand new. Piece by piece, Casino Pier manager, Lou Cirigliano, says it's come together just in time for the last month of the summer season.

"We've been open for two weeks now. And hopefully we can put in a couple of back to back weeks now and finish on a positive note, and then turn around for 2014 and come back bigger and better," says Cirigliano.

Next door, on the newly rebuilt boardwalk of Seaside Heights, Jimbo's Bar and Grill manger, Kim Manara, hopes the pier's return will be another key piece in the financial recovery for all the businesses here.

"The majority are open, people are ready," she says.

There is still a lot to complete. Casino Pier, for example, still has about 300 feet of boardwalk to repair. Organizers also say that they kept pieces of that coaster.  They plan to use those pieces to build a memorial.
