Witness Of Officer Shooting Talks To FOX 29

PHILADELPHIA -

"I was going crazy. I thought I was going to get shot," says witness Roberto Martinez.

A forgotten book bag brought Roberto Martinez back to the store that he had left minutes earlier. It was a stroke of bad luck that had him witnessing a 25th district police officer getting shot.

"He was running and the cops knew who he was and they were chasing after him and the guy pulled out a 9 millimeter and shot at the cop 3 times," says Martinez.

Martinez says the officer collapsed on the sidewalk, was put into a patrol car and rushed to Temple University Hospital. The officer has just finished surgery, and is still listed in critical condition, says police.

He says the man identified as Eric Torres was then shot by officers with a tazer before being wrestled to the ground and put into custody. Martinez was still shaken after being interviewed by police.

"I got a two year old son and a three year old son. I live right here all my life and never seen this happen," says Martinez.

Police did recover a weapon from the scene. And believe some of the crime was captured on the store's video surveillance cameras. Residents nearby say, unfortunately, it's a sign of the times in the neighborhood.

"They are doing crazy stuff, putting a lot of people and kids in danger. They don't care who they shoot or who gets laid down," says Ricky Roma.
