The U.S. electrical grid is better managed and more flexible a decade after its largest blackout but remains vulnerable to increasingly extreme weather, cybersecurity threats, and stress caused by shifts in where and how power is produced.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The largest blackout in U.S. history happened ten years ago on August 14, 2003. 50 million people were left in the dark after downed trees in Ohio landed on power lines starting a ripple effect that would be felt across the Great Lakes and the Northeast.

ATMs and gas stations shut down leaving people stranded and broke, and if you didn't already have a generator, you couldn't find one.

Fox 2 stayed on-the-air thanks to emergency generators.

The power outage was even visible on satellite imagery taken from space.

Novi-based ITC runs the high voltage power grid across Lower Michigan and parts of six other states. Fox 2's Huel Perkins asked Joseph Welch, the company's chairman, president and CEO, whether another massive blackout could happen again. Watch the video as Welch answers that and a few other questions.

Also in the video, a look back at some of our coverage of this historic event.
