OC’s Bridge Bash Ends Early - 405 Opens To Commuters

Westminster, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) Sunday afternoon crews swept debris off the freeway and the California Highway Patrol escorted cars back onto the 405.

"This construction team delivered a demolition of this size and magnitude in one shift. It's unprecedented. Never done before in America," said Ted Nguyen a spokesperson with the Orange County Transportation Authority.

In the end bridge bash shut down the 405 for about 18 hours and that forced drivers to take detours and sit in traffic. Frustrating people like Dave Henebry.  "They didn't even mention that it was closed until it was too late. Traffic was already backed up so i mean i didn't really get a chance to do a detour," said Henebry.

One hundred crew members worked through the night –operating 50 different types of heavy machinery to demolish 3600 tons of concrete.

"All that concrete is going to be recycled to be used for this project as well as other proejcts throughout southern California," said Nguyen.

The project wasn't just green, it was efficient too, as the freeway opened a couple hours ahead of schedule.  The early completion won't save orange county any money–but it does accomplish something else, "It saves so much headaches for drivers," said Nguyen.
