Foods That Aren't What They Say They Are

Butter that isn't butter, vanilla crisps containing no vanilla, eggs packaged with more than a dozen other ingredients that aren't eggs, a lot of us eat these things every day. And we do so, thinking they're something they're not.

"A lot of these foods are not new to us. They've been around for years and years and people kind of feel they're benign," Says registered dietitian Rachel Lustgarten. She knows because she gets paid to know. But how about the rest of us?

"It's probably all chemicals," says a person interviewed on the street.

To qualify as mayonnaise, the spread must contain sixty-five-percent vegetable oil. Some brands do not. Most chocolate cream cookies include no cream. And powdered lemonade usually has no lemons.

"There's a lot of foods out there that are either not what they seem to the average consumer or have a lot of additives that we don't need," says Lustgarten.

Grocery stores stock their shelves with manufactured products masquerading as foods that we consider wholesome and simple. If you don't mind eating these phantom mixtures, then continue as you were. But if you like to know what you're eating, Lustgarten says to check out an item's ingredients before you head to the check-out line.

"Just take a look at the package, read the ingredients label and be aware of what you're signing up for," says Lustgarten.
