SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A twisted piece of metal is all that remains of a red Honda Civic. It flipped several times before crashing into the woods in a single car accident Wednesday night on M-53 just north of 22 Mile Road.

It appears the accident could have been prevented.

"There appears to be a little careless or reckless driving involved at a high speed, and, of course, speed determines a lot with accidents," said Shelby Township Police Chief Ronald Woelkers. "We don't believe either one of them were wearing seatbelts."

33-year-old Sunshine Chaffin was ejected from the passenger side. Shelby Township Fire used jaws of life to cut 28-year-old Nathan Schroeder from the driver's side. Police said both were pronounced dead on the scene.

An open box of Bud Light was found inside the car.

"There was alcohol at the scene, so we're still looking into that, but possibly it could be a factor," Woelkers said.

Now as the families begin to mourn, police encourage this to be a teachable moment to us all to buckle up and respect the road and the people on it.

"Speed kills. Obviously, when you're going at those high rates of speed, these are not professional race car drivers in an enclosed race. They're out on the freeway. They're putting themselves and others and our residents in danger," Woelkers said.
