Illini assistant gets 2-game NCAA suspension

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Associated Press) -

University of Illinois men's assistant basketball coach Jamall Walker has been given a 2-game postseason suspension and a reprimand by the NCAA.

The NCAA said Friday the punishments were tied to Walker's behavior during the third-round NCAA Tournament game against Miami on March 24.

The NCAA says Walker inappropriately contacted and verbally confronted game officials and a police officer after the Illini lost 63-59.

The suspension applies to the next two NCAA postseason games Walker participates in as a coach, regardless of the school he represents.

Illinois head basketball coach John Groce (grohs) says the team takes pride in good sportsmanship and calls Walker's penalty an "unfortunate situation."

Walker said in a statement issued by the school that he accepts the penalty and is "ready to move forward."
