Marine Successfully Fights To Play College Football

Posted: Updated:

Late Monday afternoon, an American marine who was fighting the NCAA for his chance to play college football has been given the eligibility.

Freshman Steven Rhodes has served in the marines for five years. He was attending practices at Middle Tennessee State and getting ready for football season, but was told he cannot compete due to a technicality in NCAA rules.

According to the earlier NCAA decision, which has just been reversed, Rhodes cannot play because of his time playing recreational ball with the Marines.

Coach Stockstill responded, saying, "I hope the appeal process goes through because Steve is a great man and what he's done for our country the last five years and all he wants to do is finish school, get his education now and play ball."

Rhodes responded to the earlier decision, saying, "Never played anything other than you know, high school ball, intramural, recreational and the Marine Corps. I couldn't believe they were going to penalize me for that. I'm 24 years old, about to be 25.  In four years I'm almost 29 so it's detrimental to my goal and where I'm trying to get in life right now."

The NCAA released a statement on Sunday night saying they are working with the university and a final decision on Rhodes'. And tonight, it looks like it's a go-ahead for Rhodes.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
