Detroit Fire Department now hiring, despite glitch

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (MyFox Detroit) -

The Detroit Fire Department is looking to hire 90 firefighters right now. But there have been issues in the hiring process.

Watch Alexis Wiley's full video report above.

Before candidates even submit applications, they have to pass a physical abilities test. The Detroit Fire Department offered its own, but the commissioner decided to use another one that's accepted by major departments across the country. But that switch hasn't been as easy as the commissioner initially thought.

For one, Schoolcraft College is the only place that offers it.

The Detroit Firefighters Association is waving the red flag. The union says it makes no sense to send candidates to Livonia when the department's training academy could get certified and offer the same test, and charge the same price Schoolcraft does.

Don Austin is working with the Emergency Manager to make that happen.

Expect these new firefighters to be trained and at work within ten months.
