School Community Reacts To Inappropriate Coach Conduct Investigation

Posted: Updated:
RADNOR, Pa. -

"She saw it right before cheer and she was like mom read this," says Sandy Zell.

As Sandy Zell picks her daughter and niece up from cheerleading practice at Archbishop John Carroll High School, she can't help but think about what they learned on Tuesday.

"It was scary. It was shocking," says Zell.

Students got text alerts and parents received emails from the school that the Archdiocese is investigating allegations that cross country and track coach John Mooney allegedly had inappropriate conduct with a minor.

"It worries me, but I know the school is a good school and I'm sure that they'll handle it."

Pebbles is a junior. Her cousin Alessia is a freshman. They don't know coach Mooney but say the accusations are disturbing.

"Cuz we practice here and knowing he's on property that we practice on," says Alessia.

"It was scary … to think about he was in our school," says Pebbles.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia says they got the information Monday from the Department of Child and Youth services. Mooney has been placed on administrative leave without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation by Radnor Police and the Delaware County DA. He has not been charged. Officials also say that the minor isn't a current student at the school.

Debbie Smith got the email at 3:52pm from the school's principal. Smith is concerned but confident in the investigation.

"It's happening in far too many schools. You just hope it doesn't happen in your own backyard," says Debbie.

Back in 2011 there was another investigation here at the school involving a staffer. Francis Murphy, the athletic director then, was arrested and investigated for inappropriate contact with a student over Facebook.
