Police Say Woman Stole Cruiser In South Jersey

LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

A woman stole a police cruiser in Camden County overnight and then took it for a drive, authorities say.

Police say they were called to the 2000 block of Brighton Avenue at 1:10 a.m. for a domestic dispute. They say 35-year-old Danyl Fontanez answered the door and said there was no longer a problem.

When told police still have to investigate and Fontanez refused, she was arrested, handcuffed and placed in the back of the cruiser, which was left running with the air-conditioner on due to the heat. The two officers at the scene then went back inside to investigate.

Police say that's when Fontanez allegedly slipped off the handcuffs, kicked out a Plexiglas partition, slipped through a small opening and drove off down the White Horse Pike.

Several other cop cars followed her for just five minutes to a relative's house on Bayberry Road, a dead end street in Cherry Hill, where police say she continued to resist arrest.

Fontanez got cut on the chin during the arrest, so she was taken to a hospital for stitches.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported that two others at Fontanez's house for a party were involved in the fight, but she didn't want to let police in, according to police.

She's being brought back to the police station later to be charged.

The police car was not damaged, other than the partition that was kicked out.

This is the second time in five months that something like this has happened in the county, although this one turned out much better than the last time.

In the other incident, a couple allegedly stole a marked Camden police car, breaking both of the officer's legs when the hit him with it, then drove over the Ben Franklin Bridge. Once on the Pennsylvania side, police caught the guy, but the woman stole a second marked car, this one belonging to the Philadelphia Police Dept., and sped off again, nearly hitting pedestrians, driving on sidewalks, and crashing the car until it burst into flames, stopped and she was finally placed under arrest.
