High School Softball Coach Arrested On Sexual Assault Charges

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. -

Certainly not the news that school officials wanted to be dealing with days before school opens. The Delaware County Christian School's former girl softball varsity coach and assistant soccer coach was arrested today for institutional sexual assault and corruption of minors.

Newtown police say 27-year-old Trotter, who worked as a part time softball coach, had a 2 year relationship with a 16 year old student who is no longer at the school. The affidavit says that Trotter and the student had a sexual relationship from Spring of 2011 until the end of the softball season this past May. Police say encounters happened in the victim's home and inside Trotter's SUV. The victim was told by Trotter that she "loved her." The relationship didn't come to light until the parents of the victim found a cell phone that was bought for her by Trotter. The phone contained explicit text messages.

No one at the school wanted to talk about the charges that came down just 5 days before the start of classes here. Trotter is no longer an employee.

A family member who was at Trotter's home declined to comment, but her neighbors say they're absolutely shocked.

"A coach at a Christian school," says one. "A woman in a trusted position. A coach!"

"It's something you don't think about that will happen in your neighborhood, one of your neighbors. You hear about it, but don't think it could hit close to home," says another.

In a statement, school officials say "DCCS is committed to providing a safe environment for our students and does not tolerate behavior that violates the law or school policy." The school refused to tell us how long Trotter had been a coach or if any other students have come forward.

Trotter is free tonight after posting $50,000 bail. Her next court appearance is in September.
