Fertility Counselor Debunks Fertility Myths

Posted: Updated:

Babies are cute, cuddly, and oh so precious. But for some, conception is a challenge.

"Me and my husband are trying," says a couple interviewed on the street.

"Getting pregnant is such a mysterious thing," says Kathy Fountain, a licensed fertility counselor. She counsels couples on how to overcome infertility.

When it comes to children, Kathy Fountain's heard it all.

"Sexual Positions... boxers or briefs," she says. "Really, the one most people have known about is keeping their legs in the air after timed intercourse."

Yes, Kathy says, that's a myth.

And there are others. For example, specific diets. From yams to teas, it most likely is only a placebo effect.

"They're always looking They are looking for something they can do to bring them success," says Kathy. "There is fertility acupuncture, there are people who do fertility yoga and so on. We're still watching the research on that."

Who do you think blames themselves more if the woman can't get pregnant?

"You sort of feel responsible for being the one who's not able to have you conceive as a couple," says Kathy.

In reality, problems are shared, equally between dads and moms.

And have you heard this one: adopting a child will help you conceive. That's also a myth.

"Statistically, you are no greater in a position to have a baby after adoption than if you don't adopt," says Kathy

And then there's the celebrity effect. Since they wait until later in life to conceive, so can you. It's called tabloid baby syndrome.

"It gives the average woman the sense that, 'oh! I can go do that anytime I want," says Kathy. "After age 40, your chances are in the single digits[. Celebrities] never knew. No one ever really told them that their eggs diminish after age 35," says Kathy.

Same for guys and their sperm. New research shows that sperm can change, triggering behavioral problems for a baby later in life.

But the biggest myth might just be the easiest to debunk: getting pregnant is hard work.

"Just go have fun! Just try to enjoy your partner and create a baby," says Kathy.

And know when to get help, so you can rely on medicine, instead of old wives tales.

Some doctors believe stress can be a factor in conception.

But studies show it doesn't appear to have a bearing on women who are going through in-vitro fertilization.

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
