NEW YORK (AP) - The NYPD is investigating the death of a transgender woman as a possible hate crime.

Police say the victim, 21-year-old Islan Nettles, died Thursday night, five days after she was attacked in Harlem.

They say she and a friend, another transgendered woman, were out Saturday night near 148th Street and Eighth Avenue when they ran into a group of men.

According to NY1, police say when the men learned they were transgender, 1 of them shouted anti-gay slurs and repeatedly punched Nettles. The victim's friend ran away to seek help.

Nettles was taken to a hospital where she fell into a coma and was declared brain dead.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault. His name was withheld pending upgraded charges.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
