MESA, Ariz. -

A cab driver is undergoing surgery after he was shot and wounded by a person he gave a ride to. The suspect was picked up near Rio Salado Parkway and Country Club about 12:30 p.m.

The Discount Cab driver, a 46-year-old male, was driving with a passenger when he was suddenly shot about 1 p.m.

The driver slammed on his brakes and the passenger exited the car and shot again at the driver. He then fled the scene.

It's unknown what led up to the shooting, but it appears they were halfway through the ride. It's not clear if the motive was robbery or if anything was taken from the cab.

The cab driver attempted to drive himself to the hospital while calling police, but 911 operators convinced him to pull over. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Mesa Police detained a person of interest in the case. He was riding in another cab and detained on an unrelated felony warrant.

Police later determined that man was the perpetrator in the cab driver shooting. Matthew Horwardell, 28, was booked into jail for aggravated assault and possesion of a weapon by a prohibited person.
