DETROIT (AP) -

Police officers, members of a statewide auto theft prevention program and volunteers are scheduled to go door-to-door to homes and businesses in an effort to stem carjackings across Detroit.

The effort is being kicked off Monday at the Chosen Generation Community Center.

Door hangers, posters and signs about the city's "Heatwave Initiative" will be distributed. The police department is collaborating with H.E.A.T., which stands for Help Eliminate Auto Theft.

Residents and business owners are urged to call a confidential toll-free tip line when they have information about suspected car thieves, carjackers, vehicle chop shops, auto-related insurance fraud and identity theft. The number is 800-242-HEAT.
