DETROIT (WJBK) -

A security guard says he fatally shot a man during an overnight altercation inside a Midtown Detroit apartment building, FOX 2's Roop Raj reports.

Raj says the altercation broke out inside the Freedom Place apartments on W. Warren Ave. near the Lodge Freeway.

Police say the victim is a 58-year-old resident.

The 77-year-old guard tells police the victim returned home around 3 a.m., cursed at him and charged at him. The guard says he gave the man a verbal warning, but was forced to pull out his weapon and fire at the man in self-defense.

The security guard, who works for Prudential Security based in Southfield, Mich., is being questioned as the investigation continues.

The victim's identity was not released.

Attorneys for Prudential Security, Inc. tell FOX 2 they plan to issue a statement later Tuesday.
