Gov. Christie Holds 'Clean Beaches And Clean Waters' News Conference

Posted: Updated:
NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. -

With the summer of 2013 coming to a close, Governor Chris Christie visits Wildwood. He snapped pictures with folks, shook hands along the boardwalk and chatted with business owners.

Inside Fishers, located on the boardwalk, a worker was very excited to meet the governor. It was a bright spot in her day, considering business was slow this summer.

"We work hard, hope everything is ok next year, you know," she says.

Down the boardwalk, others agree they too have seen fewer customers this year.

"It was significantly lower, about 30 percent, possibly," says William Murphy, who works on the boardwalk. "I've heard everyone saying about pretty much the same thing: they're all losing money."

Yet today Governor Christie pointed out the positives, reminding folks that some predicted there would be some areas along the shore that wouldn't even open this year.

"Almost 100 percent of beaches open," he said. "Highest within the country."

Millions were poured into the "Stronger Than The Storm campaign," a campaign the governor credits with bringing tourists back to the shore.

"The fact is though, it's a lot better than it was in November and [better than] people anticipated it being. We've done everything we can do to make sure we get it back as quickly as possible. I don't think there's anybody, a thinking person, out her who thought summer of 2013 was going to be as good as summer of 2012," says Governor Christie.

Some business owners say their numbers did remain steady, but data for the harder hit areas will not be available until later this year.
