Mumford & Sons kick off Forest Hills Stadium's comeback effort

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

For the first time in more than a decade, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens hosted a major event.

Folk-rock band Mumford & Sons played in front of about 17,000 fans at the stadium Wednesday night. The Grammy winners the first in a lineup of several concerts planned for the stadium for the next three summers.

Forest Hills, which underwent a a $1.5 million renovation, has hosted the U.S. Open tennis tournament, The Beatles, The Doors and Barbara Streisand in its hey day.

Club President Roland Meier said he hopes the concerts will help finance the refurbishing of the stadium and lead to the return of tennis and other top events.

Stadium officials encouragedg concert goers to take mass transportation to the show as parking surrounding the area was restricted. The E and F trains make stops in the area.
