Abandoned, burned down home near elementary school concerning parents

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The house has been abandoned for quite some time, and burned down about a year ago now. But what's left of it still stands at the corner near an elementary school in Detroit.
With school starting, young kids will be passing by this building daily. Not only is it an eyesore, but a major cause for concern.

The cause for concern stemming from the known fact that abandoned homes attract all sorts of crime.

One parent tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley, "You never know what's going to come out of there."

Neighbors also tell us crews did come and do a little clean-up around the home after the fire last year. But then, the home was set on fire again.

Burned down, abandoned homes are no unfamiliar scene to the city of Detroit. The state is pledging more than 50 million dollars in federal funds to tear down 4,000 blighted homes.

That demolition began near the University of Detroit Mercy on Monday. Many were expecting to see this particular home on the list with thousands other, but it's not.

"Being that close to a school - that close to where kids have to walk, play, live, - it just didn't make any sense to me," teacher Dave Meloche tells Wiley.

People all over this city want to make some of those dollars are spent clearing dangerous structures in their neighborhoods, and this southwest Detroit community is no different.
