NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Health officials on Long Island are warning residents and visitors who recently dined at Driver's Seat Restaurant in Southampton to get vaccinated for hepatitis A.

A worker at the restaurant, located at 62 Jobs Lane, has tested positive for hepatitis A, a liver disease caused by a virus.

If you at food or had any beverages at Driver's Seat between August 6 and August 20, you may have been exposed to Hepatitis A.

Health officials say that getting vaccinated within two weeks of exposure can either prevent getting the disease or lessen the severity.

So health officials say that preventative vaccination is only effective if you dined at the restaurant only between August 16 and August 20, not before. You should either go to your doctor to get the shot or attend Suffolk County's free hepatitis A vaccine or immune globulin treatment clinics:

Southampton Hospital, 3rd Floor Teaching Center, 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton

  • Friday, August 30, 3-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 31, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Monday, September 2, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday, September 3, 3-6 p.m.

SCDHS offices, 3500 Sunrise Hwy, Suite 124, Great River

  • Friday, August 30 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, September 3 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If you ate at the restaurant before August 16, doctors do not recommend getting the shot. Instead, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms of hepatitis A and call your doctor if you get sick.

Some people who get hepatitis A have no symptoms. But if you do have symptoms, they may include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored bowel movements, joint pain, and jaundice, according to the CDC.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
