The dangers of 'drunkorexia'

Posted: Updated:

This Labor Day weekend plenty of us will celebrate by eating and drinking with friends and family. If you do, keep in mind that doctors warn drinking a lot of alcohol on an empty stomach can be dangerous.

Researchers say college kids are especially at risk. A study published in the Journal of American College Health identifies an alarming trend especially prevalent among college-age women. It is a condition known as "drunkorexia" -- skipping meals to compensate for the calories you consume drinking alcohol.

Physicians say consuming alcohol especially in large amounts on an empty stomach can cause you to become drunk quickly and also increase the chances you will binge eat later.

Doctors refer to this behavior not as a clinical eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia but rather as disordered eating. Both can have unwanted consequences.
