NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Electric Zoo outdoor festival on Randall's Island in New York City was canceled Sunday after two deaths were reported at the event.

Organizers of the electronic music festival made the announcement on their Facebook page.

The city recommended cancellation due to "serious health risks" and the event promoters agreed to shut it down.

During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers died and at least four others became critically ill and were in intensive care at area hospitals, according to Fox 5 News.

20-year-old Olivia Rotundo of Providence, R.I. was taken to Metropolitan Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:30 Saturday night. She was a student at the University of New Hampshire.

23-year-old Jeffrey Russ of Rochester, N.Y. was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital at 3:00 a.m. Sunday. According to his Twitter page he was a recent graduate from Syracuse University.

Both of the deaths appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy or molly) according to the mayor's office.

The Electric Zoo organizers says they have worked with city officials to reduce health risks at the event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course was to cancel the remaining day of the event.

This was the fifth year for the event.

Electric Zoo brings a wide variety of the top acts from around the world and across the spectrum of electronic music's various sub-genres. Organizers said that more than 110,000 people attended the event in 2012.
