Boston Bombing Victim Soon To Wear Prosthetic Stilettos

Posted: Updated:

In the days after the Boston Marathon Bombing, Heather Abbott had to make a hard choice. She could either live a life filled with chronic pain and keep her left leg, or she could have her left leg amputated and have a higher chance of living an active and healthy lifestyle afterwards. She went with the latter choice and allowed doctors to amputate her leg. Doctors then advised that she get a prosthetic leg to make things a little bit easier for her.

"I want it to look as much like my own leg as possible," Abbott says. "I feel more comfortable with something that's not as recognizable...."

It's been nearly five months since the bombing in Boston claimed her left leg. Last week, Heather got to take a test walk in a brand new pair of four-inch nude Stilettos designed just for her.

"This technology will not get back to the real thing, but will get pretty close to it," says Matthew Albuquerque of Next Step Bionics.

Heather's also got a prosthetic leg for flat shoes.

When asked what her plan is now, she said, "I'll probably leave the town that I live in, which is all cobblestone."

The state-of-the-art silicone cover for her "high-heel" leg should be ready in about six weeks.

Heather Abbott, from Rhode Island, was one of 264 people injured in the April 15 Boston Marathon attacks which left three dead.
