The unofficial feline mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska is in serious condition after a vicious dog attack on Thursday.

The community is disheartened and praying for the recovery of one of the town's most beloved politicians. Mayor Stubbs the cat underwent a three-hour long emergency surgery.

His owner, Lauri Stec, says he was probably venturing to a local restaurant when a dog began mauling him.

"He's our cat, but he just takes walks everyday, so he was taking a walk, probably going to the Wild Flower because he goes there and eats crab. They feed him crab. So he was going down the street just a few feet away and a dog ran over and attacked him," says Stec. "The wound is deep… you can actually see the inside his body and he had a punctured lung.."

Mayor Stubbs has been mayor for 15 years. He won election 15 years ago when town residents wrote his name on the ballot and voted him in.

"There's an ode, a burger, a t-shirt, a postcard," describes a town resident, about Stubbs memorabilia. Stubbs is also a tourist attraction.

"We've had people from Germany come in and say 'we read about him in the paper, we came here to see him,'" recalls another resident.

Everyone in town hopes Stubbs recovers soon.

"Well that was very sad because I have two cats of my own, so we're sure hoping that he's going to be okay," says a third resident.

"I guess this is another lesson in being responsible for your pet especially if you know they are aggressive. I think it's a lesson well learned and I hope is not by Stubb's losing his life," says Stec.

Community members say they hope that Stubbs still has one of his nine lives left.
