Police: Carjacking Ring May Be Targeting Luxury Cars In Suburbs

Posted: Updated:
RADNOR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

Porsche, Mercedes, Lexus and Audi -- all prime targets for high-end car thieves and carjackers, especially on the Main Line, where suspects struck twice this week.

"Obviously everyone's concerned about it, "driver Joe Devanney told FOX 29 News outside the Villanova train station Friday

First, it was a Mercedes taken from a man at gunpoint at a Bryn Mawr retirement community.

Then, it was a Porsche Cayenne, carjacked from a woman at the Villanova SEPTA station.

"He walked up, opened the passenger's door and used specific language I won't repeat and told her to get out of the vehicle," explained Radnor Police Lt. Andrew Block.

Police caught a break overnight when the Porsche Cayenne was recovered after a tipster spotted it in a parking lot near the Hilton Hotel on City Line Avenue in Philadelphia.

"We're looking for any type of evidence, such as fingerprints or some type of DNA, that may have been left behind by the person operating the vehicle," Block said.

Police are also checking surveillance cameras from surrounding buildings for video of the suspects.

The carjackings on the Main Line came just a week after a similar incident in Warrington Township, Bucks County. There, police say a couple in a new Mercedes was tapped from behind by a car at a traffic light. When they got out to investigate, their luxury car was taken right out from under them.

Police are trying to determine if this could be a ring of carjackers taking luxury cars to be shipped overseas.

In the meantime, they want drivers to be on the look out.

"I'm not sure what real precautions you could do except look around a little bit more and try to be a little safer in that respect," Devanney said.

"If you see somebody approach your vehicle you're not familiar with, and your gut's telling you something's different, drive away in that situation," Block said.

The Mercedes stolen in Bryn Mawr and the one in Warrington have not been recovered.

The Delaware County Auto Task Force is now investigating along with Radnor, Lower Merion and Warrington Police.

Block says if a carjacker confronts you and makes demands, give up the property. He says that can always be replaced or recovered. Your life cannot.
