'Laggy Awards' for LIRR's tardiness

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The TRI-State Transportation Campaign released its Laggy Awards for the Long Island Rail Road's least reliable train lines, and all the wasted money.

The campaign estimates that cancelled suspended and delayed trains between July 2012 and June 2013 cost $60.7 million, and at least 15.8 hours of delays per rider.

"What we found in our analysis was that over $61 million was lost as a result of canceled trains or delays to the Long Island economy," said Veronica Vanterpool, executive director.

The group gave its gold Laggy Award to the Babylon line for an estimated $14.7 million in lost revenue, silver for the Ronkonkoma line and bronze for the Huntington line.

The Port Jefferson line got the gold Laggy Award for most delays, an estimated 22.3 hours per rider. The Montauk line got silver, the Ronkonkoma got bronze.

Joe Calderone, the VP of MTA's customer service, said the rail road realizes it has delays. He said it's a complex system with 11 branches moving 83 million people a year and that it is trying to improve its on-time performance.

But that may not be much consolation for commuters.

The Laggy Awards come after several recent major LIRR train delays and suspensions. Calderone said the MTA is working on those problems, including adding a second track between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale, an 18-mile stretch of line that only has one track. He said the LIRR has proposed a double track system in that area.

"But more of these investments need to be made. That simply is not enough," Vanterpool said.

She said there has been a 1 percent increase in ridership the past year, so the MTA really needs to show where all the money is going.
