An airman from Connecticut serving with the New York Air National Guard was killed in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Staff Sgt. Todd Lobraico, 22, of New Fairfield, died Thursday, September 5, 2013, when enemy forces attacked his unit near Bagram Airfield, the Pentagon said.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Staff Sgt. Lobraico. His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time," Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a statement. "This loss reminds us of the dangers faced by our men and women stationed overseas. We should all be grateful for their service and sacrifices to our country."

The governor ordered all state and U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff in Lobraico's honor until his burial.

Lobraico, a graduate of New Fairfield High School, was the son of a Stamford police officer, according to the Stamford Patch.

His remains are expected to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Saturday, according to Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations.

A candlelight vigil is set for Sunday evening at a senior center in New Fairfield, according to the Associated Press.

Lobraico was assigned to the 105th Security Forces Squadron based out of Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.

The Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance, according to a report released Wednesday by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel. The report echoes an assessment conducted this year by the Federal Railroad Administration, which investigated after a string of Metro-North accidents including a December 2013 derailment that killed four riders in the Bronx.
