Cobo Center's new ballroom unveiled

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Cobo Center's new Grand Riverview ballroom was unveiled this weekend. It's 40,000 square feet and a big part of the center's multimillion dollar facelift.

Fox 2 was there for the ribbon cutting Saturday night. Participants described the ballroom as "elegant, inviting and awesome." There's also space inside for new meeting rooms and a 30,000 square foot atrium. The renovations are part of a nearly $300,000 million project that began in 2010. The project is on schedule, on budget and the investment is expected to pay off soon for Detroit.

"I can tell you between now and the end of the year we already have 52 confirmed events booked in the ballroom," said Patrick Bero. "There's another 15 tentative events and the calendar is filling up quickly."

More events mean more work for employees and the prospect of hiring more people. But, the biggest "get" as a result of the renovations? The North American International Auto Show signed on for a five-year commitment. The entire project is expected to be completed in January, 2015.
