NJ Lawmakers Outraged By Pay-Or-Go-Hungry Lunch Plan

Posted: Updated:
WILLINGBORO, N.J. -

Two New Jersey state lawmakers say that they're outraged over a new school lunch policy in the Willingboro school district in Burlington County.

The rule says that students not on the free lunch program who don't have enough money to pay for lunch won't get "humanitarian meals." Kids who stand in line anyway will get their lunches thrown out.

"This is just outrageous," says Joseph Cryan, one of the assembly members. "With poverty on the rise and families struggling to make ends meet, this is cruel and unreasonable. The idea that a child can load up a tray with lunch, but then have the meal thrown away is incomprehensible. This sounds like something from the Dark Ages."

The superintendent says the rule intends to hold parents accountable.

But Democrats Joseph Cryan and Jason O'Donnell disagree.

"This is twisted," said O'Donnell. "School districts across the state find ways to encourage people to sign up for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program without starving their children. This policy is wrong and must be changed. We need to care for our children, not deny them meals."
