Weekend killings bring year’s total to more than 300

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three more weekend killings -- including a fatal beating, shooting and stabbing -- will push the total number of homicides in the city to more than 300 for the year.

The Chicago Sun-Times has tracked 300 homicides -- plus 10 people fatally shot by Chicago Police -- through Monday afternoon. A man shot multiple times early Sunday is expected to be the 301st homicide of the year, pending a Tuesday autopsy.

Chicago Police said there have been 293 murders in the city in 2013. The discrepancy comes because the Sun-Times tracks deaths ruled homicides by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, which includes vehicular homicides, which detectives may not investigate as murders if they determine there was no intent to kill.

The most recent homicide happened on the Lower West Side when a woman was stabbed to death Sunday morning, authorities said. Police are questioning a person of interest.

Joanna Lopez, 26, was stabbed during a domestic dispute at her home in the 1700 block of West 21st Street about 6:45 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Monday autopsy determined she died from multiple stab and incised wounds and the death was ruled a homicide.

In the Gage Park neighborhood, Adrian Sianez, 24, was fatally shot in a gang-related shooting early Sunday on the Southwest Side.

Sianez was in the 5500 block of South Mozart Street about 3:40 a.m. Sunday when someone got out of an SUV and started shooting, authorities said. He was shot multiple times in the back and once in the buttocks, police said.

Sianez, of the 5700 block of South Rockwell Street, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 10:11 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office, which will perform an autopsy Tuesday.

In the Washington Park neighborhood, a man thought to be in his 20s was found beaten to death Saturday morning on the South Side.

The unidentified man's body was found about 7:05 a.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of South Ellsworth Drive, authorities said. An autopsy Sunday determined he died of head injuries from a beating and ruled his death a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.

Another 17 people were wounded in shootings throughout from Friday evening through early Monday.

A man was seriously wounded in a shooting along a CPS Safe Passage route on the West Side about 4:45 a.m. Sunday. The man, whose age was not released, was in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West Wilcox Street when someone on the street started shooting, police said. He was shot multiple times in the chest and leg, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

Genevieve Melody Elementary School is on the same block, and a Safe Passage route runs along that portion of Wilcox, according to Chicago Public Schools.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, two women and a man were shot in the 0-99 block of West 114th Street on the Far South Side, authorities said. A 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The man was listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg. The woman was shot in the hand. Another 27-year-old woman was shot in the foot and taken to Roseland Hospital.
