FOX 29 Getting Results: No Sidewalk For Kids Walking To School

Posted: Updated:

FOX 29, working to get results for school children and their parents, forced to walk into traffic by a seemingly never-ending construction project.

Safe sidewalks are a must for young children walking to school. But what if there is no sidewalk for a lengthy stretch? The budget crunch has left Philly schools short on staff, supplies and you name it, but you ought to be able to get to school safely. That's not happening right now for kids attending one Fishtown K-8 school.

The dismissal bell at Alexander Adaire Public School sends young children and their parents onto the busy East Thompson Street, not the sidewalk lining the street, but the street itself. Kids are mixing with traffic because of a massive storm water run-off project at the athletic field next door. The project has removed the sidewalk for half a block since last spring. It was like this when the last school year ended.

"It's horrible that we have to walk out in the middle of the street all the time," says Melissa Pomroy.

FOX 29 was there in the morning when Melissa Pomroy walked her two sons and their friend to school, along the sidewalk, then out into the street past the construction and back onto the sidewalk.

There is a crossing guard just up the street at Thompson and Columbia, but she can't hope to control children veering into traffic fifty yards up the block.

"[My biggest concern] is my kids getting hit by a car," says Pomroy. "We're not getting anywhere, so we had to call the news media to have the problem solved! And hopefully it'll get solved."

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon started by calling the City Water Department. They told him that the project began months ago and they promised that they'll be back out again on Thursday to finish up the job. They hope to give the sidewalk back within two to four weeks. Then Gordon caught up with Darrell Clarke and asked if he could help keep these kids safe.

"Gotta let me look into it. I mean, we're pretty good at constituent services...so we'll check it out," says Clarke.

"We'll hold you to that," says Gordon.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon has great confidence that the council president will look into this. In the meantime, Gordon's also contacted the school district and they seem willing to consider creating a temporary pedestrian passageway using concrete barriers along that stretch of Thompson Street. With another month of disruption ahead, that might be a great solution.
