Police Impersonator On The Loose In Bucks County

Bensalem, PA -
"It's scary," a driver told FOX 29.

Drivers along a stretch of Hulmeville Road in Bensalem Township are on edge after a police impersonator stopped a car on Monday.

"Oh my god  it's scary hearing something like that. Especially in this day and age, with all the shootings going on," driver Mike Erbrick told FOX 29.

"It's scary, but I don't think I would stop," said driver Valerie Conza, who's son is a state trooper.

The victim had just pulled out of a Wawa parking lot when police say that a white Chevy Impala pulled in behind him. It had red and blue lights in the grill, over the dashboard and on the rear deck .

"Believing it was a police officer, he pulled over and the male approached him and asked him for his driver's license, the subject appeared to be taken back at that point," described Sergeant Andrew Aninsman of the Bensalem Police Department.

The victim told police the suspect was nervous, so he decided to get out of his car. That's when the police imposter went back to his car and took off, the driver then called 911.

"The driver believed that the reason why the suspect got startled was that he may have believed it was a female he was stopping when he realized it was a male," Sgt. Aninsman said.
The incident occurred along this stretch of Hulmeville Road between Park Avenue and Hansel Drive. Drivers here are on the alert.

"I'm thinking about my niece and nephew right now," Erbrick said. Thank God it wasn't one of the kids around here. Some teenagers, cause you know they don't know no better, that's got me scared right now," he added.

"You can just kind of tell by somebody's demeanor, I think," Conza told FOX 29.

Police say the suspect is a white male in his forties with a thin build. He has a light beard with some gray hair. He's dressed in dark clothing. Police want drivers to be vigilant when they're pulled over.

"Lock the doors, keep your window up and when the person approaches, see if they're in full uniform, even if they are, make sure they're police officers. If you're unsure, call 911 and asked them if a police officer has a car stopped in the area where you're at," Aninsman explained.

Police say you can also drive to a well lit area before stopping. Always ask to see a badge, Aninsman said. You should make sure the badge has the township name on it.
