CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A man was fatally shot Tuesday morning while standing at a bus stop in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

The victim was identified as Billy Sergent, 67, of the 6000 block of South Vernon Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Neighbors describe Sergent as a "pillar" of his community and was a mainstay for decades. He was killed as he set out for his daily morning regimen.

Sergent was shot in the chest and buttocks about 8:45 a.m., police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. The shooting happened as he stood at a bus stop in the 6000 block of South King Drive, authorities said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died at 9:15 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

The owner of a convenience store tells FOX 32 off camera that Mr. Sergent stopped by for coffee every morning for years. He said everyone knew Sergent.

Adarryll Hoskin says he lived in the same apartment building as Sergent. They spoke every morning.

"He lived in the community for at least 50 plus," Hoskin says. "I've been living over here for 7 years. He never made me feel like a stranger. And I didn't' know his name... but we'd always speak. He was just that gentle of a guy."

Hoskin believes the victim was taking the bus to the racetrack as he usually did.

There are reports that Sergent was caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting, but police have not confirmed those reports.

Area South detectives have a person of interest in custody, but no charges had been filed as of early Tuesday afternoon.
