Lincoln Square takes active role to prevent gang activity

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Gang violence in Chicago is at the tipping point. The Lincoln Square neighborhood has taken an active role to prevent crime from escalating in their community.

Imagine waking up this morning and finding a note at your door, because your normally quiet neighborhood is seeing an uptick in gang activity and you need to watch out. That's what some Lincoln Square residents are waking up to this Wednesday morning.

Lincoln Square is a diverse area, home to many successful restaurants and businesses. This isn't a neighborhood city residents usually associate with high crime or gang violence. So Alderman Pat O'Connor wants to stop the growing problem before it gets any worse.

The posted signs ask residents to keep their eyes and ears open, and to let local government and law enforcement know about any suspicious activity they might see taking place.

Gang graffiti can be an indication that some sort of turf war is underway. There have been some marks reported in the area already. Police and Ald. O'Connor want to get on top of it - take photos, figure out who is behind the new graffiti and stop problems before they start.

Grove Park used to be a stronghold for the Latin Kings. But since the community was very active with its Park Advisory Council and Chicago Police, they were able to push the gang activity out of Lincoln Square.
