TREVINO TRIAL: BCA testimony outlines blood evidence

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Blood evidence was at the heart of testimony on Tuesday in the murder trial of Jeffery Trevino, which focused on analysis from a Minnesota BCA forensic scientist.

Trevino, 39, faces two counts of second-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Kira Steger, whose body was pulled from the Mississippi on May 8 after she went missing in late February.

Prosecutors say the blood found inside the couple's St. Paul rental home tells the true story,a and BCA Crime Scene Coordinator Lindsey Garfield was on the stand for most of the day.

Garfield helped process the scene on Feb. 25 and 26 after Steger was reported missing, and she spoke to the jury about the investigation's findings blood stain by blood stain.

Garfield testified that her team found several spots that tested positive preliminarily for blood in the couple's bedroom, including on the wall, the floorboard, carpeting, a spot beneath the doorknob, on the closet and on their box spring. Garfield also said it appeared the box spring had been rotated. It also appeared that other pieces of bedroom furniture had been rearranged, including a book case and plastic drawers based on indentations left in the carpeting.

The BCA also found apparent human blood in other areas of the house -- in the kitchen, the basement near the washing machine and on a carpet cleaner Trevino had borrowed from Steger's mother just weeks earlier.

During the cross-examination, Trevino's defense attorney, John Conard, argued that the blood tests entered as evidence were preliminary field blood tests and were not 100 percent blood matches. Conard also attacked the science, arguing that blood testing is hypersensitive to items other than blood.

Conard also introduced a new question -- if it is blood, whose blood is it? That's a question DNA experts from the crime lab will certainly be asked as the trial continues.
