Fall Party Tips, Put A Pin In It!

Posted: Updated:

Lifestyle expert Melina Davies, owner of Olive & Thyme (www.OliveandThyme.com) stopped by our studios to offer her tips on how to throw an easy, no fuss dinner party at home.

For when your guests arrive, offer some assorted cheese and charcuterie.  A beautiful cheese plate is not difficult to put together, and it makes a great impression on your guests.  Skip the grocery store and find a cheese or specialty shop that carries a large assortment.  Melina recommends five cheeses that make a well-rounded cheese board – a triple crème such as a brillat savarin, a blue such as the cheddar Shropshire blue, a cow's milk such as Beemster XO, a goat's milk such as Monte Enebro, and a sheep's milk such as Ossau-irraty.

Another great tip is to macerate some berries for an easy dessert.  In a bowl, add any of your favorite berries, sugar, and liquid – Champagne works great!  Mix and partially crush in a bowl, then serve it over ice cream or jar it.  It makes a great take home gift for your guests.

And the easiest way to make a great impression is to set a beautiful table setting.  Stacked plates look elegant, and they make it easy to serve each course without having to reset the table.  Dress up your napkins and skip the napkin rings.  Use twine to tie flowers to the napkins.  This looks especially beautiful when they match the centerpiece!  All of this can be done the night before so that you don't have to stress about it the day of your party.  And when dining, a great tip is to serve your entrée in a mini cocotte – a small dutch oven.  You can go right from the oven to the table with no extra dishes to place!

Sutter Zachman had his first record deal when he was barely out of his teens. You may have seen the Orange County native was on stage at the Largo and other hot clubs around LA. He then left town...after what he called a few "bouts" with the music business, but now he is back with a new EP called ‘Repeat Offender.'
