Two sides claiming victory in same-sex marriage lawsuit ruling

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A judge on Friday threw out a motion to dismiss the lawsuit of 25 same-sex couples that seeks to legalize gay marriage in Illinois. It was a big decision them and both sides are claiming victory.

Efforts to legalize it here have stalled. Lawmakers adjourned for the summer without taking a vote on a same-sex marriage bill.

These couples can now continue to argue that state law regarding marriage discriminates based on sexual orientation but people who oppose gay marriage are claiming a victory as well.

Good Day Chicago heard from both sides of the issue Monday.

Camilla Taylor, from Lambda Legal – a national organization committed to civil rights for the LGBT community, is one of the attorneys representing the couples who filed the lawsuit to legalize gay marriage in the state.

Peter Breen, vice president and senior counsel for the Thomas More Society, is working to keep marriage between a man and a woman. Your organization is also claiming victory in the ruling - even though the judge dismissed a motion to throw out a lawsuit to legalize gay marriage in Illinois.
