A Mesa man has been arrested for child abuse after allegedly lifting his 5-month-old daughter into the air and allowing her to be struck in the head by the ceiling fan.

Jeromy Lee Gilfillan, 29, was jailed on two counts of child abuse.

According to court documents, Gilfillan is responsible for watching his daughter and her 2-year-old brother during the day while his girlfriend works. When she came home from work Monday, she noticed her daughter had swelling on the side of her head.

She asked Gilfillan what happened, and he allegedly said "I didn't do anything" and told her not to call 911.

The baby's mother took her to the hospital and an exam revealed complex bilateral depressed skull fractures, requiring surgery to repair.

Police interviewing Gilfillan, who admitted to lifting the girl in the air into the ceiling fan. He said it was an accident, and even though she cried and whimpered, he thought she was fine, documents allege. He said he forgot about the ceiling fan when his girlfriend asked him what happened earlier in the day.

He acknowledged the fan's speed was likely medium or high.

The victim's mother told detectives Gilfillan does not believe the victim is his biological child.
