NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A surfer found a dead humpback whale on Long Island Tuesday. The 34-long female whale was washed up on the beach about a mile east of Gilgo Beach, according to Kimberly Durham of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

The whale, estimated to weigh about 20 tons, was entangled in a net, Durham said. It suffered wounds and trauma, she said.

The Riverhead Foundation staff and officers with the state's Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene to investigate. They buried the whale on the beach, the AP reported.

Humpback whales are on state and federal endangered species lists.
