Report: The World Will Run Out Of Cocoa By 2020

Posted: Updated:

Experts say the world will run out of cocoa, the key ingredient of chocolate, due to pressures of a rising global demand.

The 'Daily Star' reported there are not enough cocoa plantations across the globe to meet the on-going demand of chocolate.

According to global market researcher Euro Monitor International, chocolate consumers will eat about 7.4 million tons of the sweet treat in 2013, up nearly 2 percent on a year earlier and worth about $110 billion. Chocolate prices will increase over the next few years as cocoa becomes harder to get hold of.

Some experts say many brands will fill chocolate bars with more nuts and fruit as they are cheaper to produce.

Last week industry experts who met at the British Library in London predicted the exact date will be October 2, 2020.
