Local trucker helps organize DC protest

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Truckers across the country are coming together in an attempt to lock up the brakes on Congress. The movement is drawing attention nationwide and includes many followers in Atlanta.

Thousands of truckers are expected in Washington, D.C. for a protest scheduled to start Friday. But for one of the organizers, Earl Conlon from Blairsville, it goes much deeper.

"My biggest grievance is Congress and the president voting to send weapons and troops to Syria," said Conlon. "The man -- and everybody that supported it -- needs to be arrested for treason."

Conlon talked to FOX 5's George Franco on Skype from a Pennsylvania truck stop. He says after his current job, he will head to the nation's capital to help stage the protest around the Beltway.

"We have no intentions of keeping regular, everyday average folks from getting in and out of the city," Conlon promised. "This is a peaceful protest."

Conlon says the protest was planned before the government shut down. Now he hopes Washington hears their message.

"Do what the law and constitution says because that's absolutely important," Conlon said. "They're getting out of hand with our regulations that they're putting on to us."

Conlon said he expects up to 3,000 truckers and their big rigs at the protest this weekend. Click here for more information.
