It's getting to be that time of year again, when the common cold makes an unwelcome visit to just about everyone's home.
Dr. Mehmet Oz of "The Doctor Oz Show" has some advice on how to tackle common symptoms of the sniffle season.
- Post-nasal drip doesn't just happen when you're sick, it actually occurs all the time. It's just that you normally don't notice you're swallowing up to a quart of mucus a day. But when allergies or illness cause that mucus to thicken, or swelling in the throat blocks it up, you get uncomfortable and you want relief.
- Keep in mind that just because you've got post-nasal drip, that doesn't mean you have a cold. If you've got itchy eyes along with that runny nose, chances are it's a seasonal allergy.
- If you're feeling pressure or pain around your face, even a toothache, that could be a sinus infection.
- But if you're just a tad achy all over or feeling run-down, it's more likely to be a cold. The good thing is, no matter what the cause, you can find relief with a saline nasal rinse, like the Neti Pot. Your pharmacist can direct you to other types of over-the-counter rinse products that can help as well.
